2015 Favourites

So 2015 has come and is almost gone! This means it is time to share with you some of my favourite things– what I tried, ate, listened to, wore, etc, etc.  I’m pretty sure that I’ll miss some things or go on about other things.

Let’s get started!

Online/Social World Favourites:

Favourite Social Platform: Instagram–Why? Because I enjoy sharing moments with friends and random strangers.

Online Show: Kimmy Schmidt: Unbreakable–Why? I have no idea why. I just really love how random it was.

YouTuber: Tess Christine–I have been watching Tess since she first started way back when, but I have grown to appreciate her videos much more because who doesn’t want all her clothes and adventures. I just feel like I can relate to her a bit more than most YouTubers.

Public Figure to Follow: Erin Ireland. I was introduced to Erin through an article I read in Chatelaine and instantly became a big fan. After meeting her this year (which is also part of my 2015 favourites), I grew to respect her even more. I love how she practices what she preaches but also doesn’t force it on you. I also love watching her snaps.

Favourite Snapchatter: Erin Ireland & Jillian Harris. I love them both because they share a lot of their adventures, what they eat and what they do. They’re both awesome. I obviously couldn’t pick just one.

Favourite Blogger/Vlogger: Zoella. Hands down my favourite vlogger. Her Christmas vlogs were on point.

Favourite 2015 Movies:

Jurassic World: It was nice to relive those childhood moments.

Avengers: Age of Ultron: I like superhero movies a lot. ❤

The Feeling- Justin Bieber ft Halsey

Heartstrings- Leighton Meester

Favourite Book(s):

Sharp Objects- Gillian Flynn: If you liked Gone Girl, you might also find this one quite utterly disturbing and interesting all at once. I couldn’t put this down while on the plane and in Mexico.

The Literary Review: A magazine filled with poems and short stories. I didn’t need to read loads of books this year because I spent a lot of time reading the Summer edition of it.

Invisible Chains: Canada’s Underground World of Human Trafficking: As someone who is extremely passionate about Human Trafficking issues, I decided to read about the issues and I learned a lot.

Favourite Beauty Products:

Baby Oil: My skin loves this stuff.

Biotherm AquaSource Deep Serum: For someone who suffers from dry skin, this was a life saver.

Rosy Lush Face Mask: I definitely need to go buy more of this!

Coconut Hair Masks/Shampoo & Conditioner: I like anything coconut really. Especially when it means it’s going to rescue my hair and scalp.

(see Beauty Favourites: Empties Review where I divulge more about each product that I really loved this year, you can also check out Lush Face Mask Review: Rosy Cheeks for my favourite face mask)

Vichy Ideal Soleil After Sun SOS Balm: I came back super sunburnt from Mexico, this lotion really helped my skin heal faster.

I didn’t have any favourite lipbalms, lipsticks or mascara’s this year. I just couldn’t find one that I really needed to have. I have tonnes of red lipsticks and they’re all from NYX Cosmetics so I guess that whole brand of lipsticks is my favourite.

Foundation: Lise Watier Tient Lift Anti-Rides SPF 20 ❤ I loved this foundation till the lost drop. It not only had nice coverage but also felt good on the skin. I think I sort of found it’s drugstore dupe which is CoverGirl TruBlend Liquid Foundation in M7.

Perfume: My Burberry. This to me smells like what I imagine being a young woman off to work should smell like. Does that even make sense? I just love it.

And this my list of what I really loved this year. I’m 100% sure I missed a lot of good stuff but 2015 had a lot of good stuff. Oh yeah, like I GRADUATED! One of the best things to have happened to me this year. ❤

Bye 2015! ❤

De-Clutter, Clutter

“The point is, you need to distinguish between what honestly moves you and what the world is telling you should melt your heart. If something doesn’t reach you on a personal level, let it go. It’s hard enough dealing with everything that does.” by Judi Culbertson

The Clutter Cure:Three Steps to Letting Go of Stuff, Organizing Your Space & Creating the Home of Your Dreams

Do you have a drawer full of stuff that you either don’t use, have no idea what it used to be or just haven’t even opened yet? Well, I did.

For the past few months, I have been spending a lot of time de-cluttering my home, my room, my garage, my phone and laptop , my shelves, and my life in general. I honestly find cleaning therapeutic and there isn’t anything wrong with donating things to people who need it more than I do or selling things for extra cash…I mean, I have to pay for my Iced Soy Cinnamon Chai Latte somehow now that I’m unemployed…it’s a luxury that I like having once in a while.

Anyway back to what I was getting at, I have never felt so good cleaning and getting rid of things that are just sitting there. For some reason, some of us get emotionally attached to things because we think we will forget the memories that came along with them. I had two boxes full of “memories” which is just a lot of knick knacks that I have collected over the years; ticket stubs, movie stubs, birthday candles, ribbons, hockey tickets, you get the idea. I decided to go through that box and organize it as much as possible. I have organized so much that I can hang almost all my clothes, I have only 6 drawers filled with clothes. It just feels so good to have nothing under my bed (I only have my workout equipment under my bed) and have my cat sleep under there without a fear that he will get hurt. Organizing and owning less is the new thing, if you didn’t know!

So here are my tips on de-cluttering your life, room, car, etc.

1: Turn up some jams!

  • Jamming to music makes the job a lot less daunting and a bit more fun. So crank up some backstreet boys and clean it all up!

2: Pick an area

  • There are some people or some books that say to do your whole house at once but if you do have a job, there is no way you can do all of it in one day. You could do it on your day off but most people do all their errands on their days off. So I say start off slow, make a check list of the areas you know that need to be cleaned, de-cluttered and organized.

3: Have three boxes or bags!

  • One for the garbage
  • One for donations
  • One for storage

You will find that sometimes your favourite pair of socks have way too many holes in them so you definitely want to through those out. A really good trick that I have learned comes from the one and only Martha Stewart on how to de-clutter your wardrobe or closet, check it out Closet Organization. She has quite a few tips throughout her website, there was one and I wish I could find the link for but I find her website super helpful.

4: Always ask yourself: Do I need it, Will I wear it…

  • These questions will keep you on task and will definitely help with getting rid of things you no longer need, no longer love, or just no longer want. Also, be careful because sometimes you’re in the zone and accidentally get rid of something you still wanted.

5: Be Inspired.

  • Don’t feel forced to clean. Do it when you really feel motivated.

I have this rule now that I de-clutter not only physical things that I own but feelings, emotions, thoughts that make me feel bad. Most of the time you feel claustrophobic in your home and it’s not because of all the stuff you have but sometimes it’s stuff you keep inside that you need to let go. So I say clean up your contact list, delete people you don’t talk to or toxic people. I know that’s pretty crazy sometimes but I have done that, my contact list is so small because these are people who I want in my life. They are highly motivated, encouraging, supportive, funny, good people overall but most importantly, Drama-free.

De-cluttering doesn’t only clean out your home but it gives you some piece of mind. I know you’ve probably read so many blogs about this but it does bring you closer to you. In our society, we are bombarded with needing so much, we need the latest shoes, the latest phones, the latest this and that, we forget we have so much and we accumulate so much stuff to “satisfy” this idea that we need all of it to be happy. Don’t get me wrong, I have so many books but I either gift them, keep them or donate them in order to share my love of books. Consumerism is a problem but we won’t get too into this. Why? because we all know it, we admit that it’s a problem.

Anyway, it feels really nice to completely clean up, to recycle all that paper, re-use that old pair of earrings to make something creative to give as a gift. If you really want more stuff on de-cluttering, I’ve heard really good things from Youtubers such as Ingrid Nilsen and Essie LaLonde. There is also a really good book out there that has been talked about a lot basically everywhere, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering And Organizing by Marie Kondo. I haven’t read it yet but I plan to and see if I do anything that she mentions.

Well, enjoy the rest of August! I can’t believe it creeped up behind us and is already almost over.

Leibster Award

I’ve been nominated for an award?!?! What? No way! I actually almost missed it. It had gone to my spam folder and I was checking my notifications and boom!
Before I continue to share my excitement, I guess I should explain the award. It’s for newer blogs with less than 200 followers. I didn’t expect to be noticed and yet here I sit writing about an award. I think there’s something nice about an unexpected award. It’s only happened to me once before, I was volunteering at an event, ended up leaving with an award and I didn’t expect it. I love it. People recognizing the skills and abilities of others. I like it.

So first of all I want to thank Good Woman for the nomination! It really means so much to a newbie to have been recognized by someone who has been nominated for this award three times! I cannot wait to pass on this awesome feeling that I’m feeling.

Oh, I should mention the rules right about now right?

1. Thank & link the person who nominated you. [x]
2. Answer the questions given by the nominator [x]
3. Nominate 11 other bloggers, with < 200 followers & link them [x]
4. Create 11 new questions for the nominees to answer [x]
5. Notify the Nominees [x]

Here are the answers to my questions!

What is the best advice you ever received?
The best advice…mhmmm…my parents give a lot of good advice. I think the best one is to focus on myself first and then others. It’s important to have a healthy relationship with yourself first before you go and help others. If you can’t help yourself, you really can’t help others.

What is one skill you wish you had, but sadly lack?
Playing the piano. I can sing and I wish I had taken more time to actually learn to play. I sometimes try but like all things in life, I have to find the time still.

How do you fit blogging into your life?
I have always been writing from a young age, I’ve always kept a journal so transitioning into the blogging world wasn’t too difficult. I try to write as much as I can and it really helps me feel great.

What one post on your blog are you most proud of?
The blog I’m post proud of is Mirror Mirror… because I really poured my heart out. I was so afraid of what my friends or people would think when I exposed myself as a person but I have never regretted it.

What is your favorite place in the world?
I have five of them. Is that weird? In the summer, my favourite place in the world is on top of a mound at Blackie Spit Park by Crescent Beach in White Rock, Vancouver. I like going there when the grass is this crusty gold colour and I like to sit there and just smell that ocean breeze and close my eyes. I’ve gone to cure heart aches there. It works. In the winter, my favourite place in the world is Whistler. When I was younger my family used to drive up all the time for the day and as I got older, we went less. I love Whistler though. I love the snow and the atmosphere. I just like walking around and taking it all in. Whistler reminds me of my freedom. The next place is actually my room, it’s my oasis when I can’t go to my other places. It has music, lights, candles, over 100 books and pillows. I sometimes love just locking myself in there and lay on my bed while I read. It’s a mini vacation. The fourth place is any bookstore. Weird right? Books have always been a thing for me. They have always been a part of my life. Whenever I’m stressed I just walk across the street and hang around Chapters for a good few hours even if I don’t buy anything. I just feel such comfort. The last place is the Pekoe Tea Lounge. It’s a cute little tea shop. I was going through a tough time after a break up and my moms health, so while she was in the hospital, I was across the street reading and drinking tea. What I love about it is that you’re able to pick the tea cup you want to drink out of.

What three words would you use to describe your self?
Ambitious, Friendly and Weird

What is your favorite color and why?
Another favourite’s question? ahhh. I have so many favourites. I literally can’t pick just one but I’ll try. PURPLE. BLUE. GREEN. Purple. I love purple because it’s not pink. Blue & Green because they make me happy plus if you’re a Vancouver Canucks fan…I love rocking my jersey!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
OLD CITIES! Think of Paris, Amsterdam, Rome…you know places with cute little coffee shops and amazing country views. Where the buildings are so magnificent and tell a story.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
Walk around with my sister. We tend to have amazing life conversations and silly ones as well. She’s my best friend so whenever we do something, whatever it is, it’s a lot of fun.

Do you prefer dogs, cats, or neither? Why?
I used to be only a birds, bunnies and dog person until we also got a cat. Oh, we also had a fish! Most of them rescues (actually the majority of our pets have been rescues), we like animals. We want a farm. Almost there!

What personal habit in others annoys you the most?
Eating Habits or when I can hear people breathing. I know some people have conditions but if you’re eating and I can hear you breathing…it really makes me cringe. Apparently that’s some sort of brain disorder…but whatever.

Hometown Memories

For my hometown memory, I’d like to share this Instagram picture from 6 months ago. This embodies how I absolutely loved my summer. It was amazing to stand under the bridge, by the water while awaiting the Sea Taxi with my family. It was amazing to be so close to the water and to smell the salt water and just hang around Vancouver.

Thank you https://soulstoriesbycarol.wordpress.com/hometown-memories-photo-event/ for this amazing event!

Missy What?!

Okay, so if you haven’t already heard..Missy Elliot made an awesome appearance during the Super Bowl. There were many of us…(like me) who were ecstatic to hear and see her perform. It’s been quite awhile. Of course, there were some who were a little confused as to who she was and wondered if she was a new artist.

It’s funny how so many people weren’t sure of who she was. My point is some songs have become something that would be used as a throwback. You know songs of nostalgia. They’re barely played on your iTunes or burned into a cd somewhere in your room. I used to listen to Missy Elliot when I was in high school (which was five years ago). Music is constantly changing which means younger kids nowadays listen to completely different artists than what I listened to and to what my parents and so forth. Which got me thinking, I probably don’t know that many artists that past generations listened to ( I know some because I’m a moodie…its like a foodie but for music).

So what I decided to do for my #throwback feature was to focus on music.

We all have that one song that takes us back to hanging with your pals, that one school dance, that song that got you through that tough time. So what I plan to share with all of you are three songs for my #TBT.

1. Chris Brown- ‘Run It’

Yup, that’s right before he went and did things that I do not condone. I was obsessed with CB. This was “my jam” when I actually could bust a move. I know I make myself sound really old, but I actually can’t dance anymore. I feel like I lost my hip hop dance moves. But back to my throwback. Everyone knew this was my jam. I had his posters alongside, Usher and Keshia Chante (you can YouTube her, if you don’t know) on my walls. So let me share this song with you because it always makes me want to dance, even if I don’t like the artist CB has become.

2. Ciara ft. Petey Pablo- ‘Goodies’

Oh gosh, how could anyone forget about my goodies…haha just kidding. Ciara was and still is my girl. I know it sounds crazy but I wanted to be her because of her sick dance moves. She had an athletic build and could make you want to dance and sing. Along many of her other songs, this was one of my favourites. She had songs that fit your every mood. I would always listen to her on my MP3 player.

3. Ne-Yo – ‘Miss Independent’

So for me Ne-Yo was the Bruno Mars of my generation. And okay, again I’m not that old but every girl I knew was jamming out to Ne-Yo. He made us feel things, he was there when we were sad and when we knew we would be okay. I was never ‘so sick’ of listening to him. I have a whole cd (that I burned for my stereo) of his music to get me through my high school crushes. When this song came out, I was finally leaving high school and it felt perfect. I felt like I would become this big independent girl who is going off to college. Oh and again, he can also dance. I really like dancers and singers, if you didn’t get that by now.

So this is my #throwbackthursday for this week, feel free to tell me your #tbt songs whether they are new, recent or a nice classic. I can’t wait to go ahead and listen to them. If you didn’t know that already, I love listening to music and finding little gems. So don’t forget to share!!

XOXO
